Swiss premium implant manufacturer and the anchor of the Straumann Group, the largest dental implant business in the world by revenue. Straumann began in metallurgy, not dentistry - its move into implants came out of alloy research for bone fixation.

History

Founded in 1954 by Dr. Ing. Reinhard Straumann in Waldenburg, Switzerland, the Straumann Institute began as a research house for watchmaking alloys and materials testing. In the 1970s its work on non-corroding alloys for bone fracture fixation pulled it into medical technology.

A 1990 management buyout split the business: the orthopaedic division became Synthes, and the remaining company focused exclusively on dental implantology. Straumann went public on the SIX Swiss Exchange in 1998.

From 2011 onward Straumann assembled a multi-tier group by acquisition - buying into digital dentistry, biomaterials, clear aligners, and critically the value implant segment, where it now competes with itself through Neodent, Anthogyr, and Equinox rather than discounting the premium Straumann brand.
