History

In the 1950s Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered that bone fuses with titanium - osseointegration - after finding that a titanium optical chamber implanted in a rabbit's leg could not be removed. In 1965 he placed the first osseointegrated dental implants in Gösta Larsson in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Swedish health authorities approved dental implants for clinical use in 1978, and Brånemark partnered with Bofors to industrialise the technology. Bofors Nobelpharma was founded in 1981 in Gothenburg, renaming itself Nobel Biocare in 1996.

Danaher acquired Nobel Biocare in 2014 for approximately $2.2 billion. In December 2019 Danaher spun its dental platform out as Envista Holdings, where Nobel Biocare sits today alongside Implant Direct and Alpha-Bio Tec.
