History

Dentsply Sirona was created in February 2016 by the merger of Dentsply International - a US dental products manufacturer with roots stretching back to the 1890s - and Sirona Dental Systems, the German imaging and CAD/CAM specialist.

The implant portfolio came together through acquisition. The Friadent line (Frialit, Xive, Ankylos) arrived through Dentsply's German dental holdings, with Frialit-1 dating to 1974 as the first root-analogue implant and Ankylos developed in 1986. In 2011 Dentsply bought Astra Tech from AstraZeneca for $1.8 billion - its largest acquisition in 115 years - and in 2016 added MIS Implants for $375 million to cover the value segment.

The result is an unusual structure: Astra Tech, Ankylos, Xive, and MIS operate as distinct brands with incompatible connections, each retaining its own clinical following.
